"DATA LINK" - The emergency information scheme.

There has been a widespread concern among members of the community that should they fall victim to an unexpected emergency they might, for whatever reason, be unable to communicate to the Emergency Services (Ambulance, Fire or Police) and Care Agencies details of medical conditions, medications and allergies. Insufficient knowledge of these conditions could delay the most immediate help as could a lack of information relating to their doctor, next of kin and dependent persons.

WORTHING LIONS CLUB NOW PROVIDE DATA LINK TO THE PUBLIC IN THE WORTHING AREA

On the 31st March 2007 the Worthing Lions Club held their launch of their MiaB (message in a bottle) scheme in Worthing Town Centre and distributed nearly 800 'bottles'. They have now taken over the responsibility of providing for the Worthing Area. The Neighbourhood Watch office at Centenary House, Durrington are holding Worthing Lions stock for distribution to Neighbourhood Watch in the Worthing area. Any person or organisation requiring MiaB in large quantities contact the NW office and they will be put in touch with the Worthing Lions.

The Adur, Arun and rest of Sussex will still be provided for by Neighbourhood Watch.

"Data Link" (or 'The Message in the Fridge' as it is becoming known) has been created to deal with such eventualities. It provides the Emergency Services with the necessary information, identifies the patient, her/his condition, medicines prescribed, allergies, the names and addresses of the doctor, next of kin, dependent(s), or person(s) to be contacted. The data provided, its format, labelling and location are standardised throughout West and East Sussex.

Data Link Pack

"Data Link" consists of a small clearly labelled plastic container in which a completed and folded information sheet has been placed. The container is then stored in the compartment inside the door of the household regrigerator. The container currently being used is a 35-mm film cassette bearing an "Emergency Information" label. A label is fixed to the outside of the refrigerator to indicate the presence of the container within and a further label is fixed in a prominent position above the lock on the inside of the main access door to the dwelling. This indicates that "Data Link" is available.

Whilst "Data Link" is of more interest to the elderly or incapacitated, the scheme is intended to cover everybody regardless of their age. "Data Link" kits are distributed to Medical Centres, Parish Offices and Pharmacies free of charge.

Data Link in Action

Medications and circumstances alter and it is important that personal details are kept up to date. Existing forms should not be amended.
