THE WEST DOWNS CRIME PREVENTION BUS

A bus previously used for driver training was purchased from Stagecoach in Gateshead in 1996 with the help of funds provided by the Sussex Police Community Crime Prevention Department and, following a great deal of hard work, was converted into a mobile crime prevention unit. Over the years the bus has travelled many miles to bring the crime prevention message to the public and has been seen at a large number of public and private events all over Sussex. It has attended Steam Rallies, Regattas, Air Shows and numerous Fetes over the past few years.

The Bus on location in Adur Avenue, Worthing

The Bus is regularly manned by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers and the Crime Prevention Co-ordinator or his assistant and piloted by one of our volunteer drivers, to whom we offer our special thanks. Without them life would be difficult to say the least.

It is also being used at regular venues in the towns and villages as a place for the public to meet their local Councillors and their local Police as well as learning how best to protect themselves against crime. They can also purchase, at very much reduced rates, a variety of personal, door, window and movement detector alarms which can also be viewed on the Products page.

The type of usage of the Bus is now changing and we are putting more emphasis on taking the crime prevention message to the doorstep of the community - frequently to the most vulnerable and those living in 'hot-spot' areas, with no Neighbourhood Watch schemes, who are least likely to seek advice.

Volunteers circulate letters in the area to be visited inviting residents to come on board for home security and personal safety advice and to purchase security products. Here is Ivor Webb demonstrating a personal alarm to a group of interested visitors.
