BEAT ATM FRAUD

It has been reported that fraud at ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines, better known as 'Hole in the Wall Cash Dispensers) has increased by 85% over the last twelve months. Techniques have become more sophisticated and the latest involves a procedure known as 'skimming'.

A device is attached with double sided tape over the card slot and the details are read from the magnetic strip when a card is entered, while a tiny camera records the personal identity number (PIN) tapped on the keyboard. The card is then cloned and cash taken from the victim's account. These devices are often carefully made to match the colour and materials of the ATM.

When withdrawing cash check the card slot is concave, rather than convex, as slots which jut out from the machine, rather than receding back into it, may mean thieves have meddled with it. Here's what to look for.

VISA & MASTERCARD TELEPHONE SCAM

Two people have recently received telephone calls from people supposedly at "Visa" and "Mastercard" saying that they were in Fraud and Security and giving a badge number - they then went on to say that the owner's card had been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern and they were just calling to verify - did the cardholder purchase a device/expensive item for £497-99 from a marketing company based in a certain town ? When they replied they had not the caller said it was a company they had been watching - charges ranged from £297 to £497, just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. They then verified the card owner's address and said that the amount would be credited back to the card - they would start the investigation and if they had any queries they should call the 0800 number on the card itself quoting a six digit number. They then said they wished to check the owner was in possession of the card, asking them to turn the card over and read the last three digits of the number on the signature strip. THESE THREE DIGITS WERE THE INFORMATION THE FRAUDSTERS REQUIRED. Within 20 minutes, the two people sensibly thought to call the 08oo number on their card and were advised that a new purchase had just been put on their card for £497-99. Apparently the fraudsters are using the same word for word script in each call, just varying the names.

Please be on your guard against giving out details of your card to anyone other than trusted sources. This particularly applies to the three digit number on the reverse which is needed for purchasing goods on the telephone or internet and which identifies your card.
